FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease)

FLUTD is an abbreviation for feline lower urinary tract disease and is a broad term that encompasses a wide range of conditions, diseases that affect the lower urinary tract.  These diseases can cause your cat to push its penis out and you often observe inflammation.

Although lower urinary tract infections are relatively rare in cats, it should be taken into account that they can predispose to opportunistic infections as a complication of the underlying disease or treatment. This means that many cats that have encountered an infection for the first time may be more likely to get an infection again or suffer from a related problem.

If you see any symptoms of this disease in your cat, you should definitely show it to your veterinarian to confirm the FLUTD diagnosis. At this point, your veterinarian will try to clarify the diagnosis; will reach the result by conducting urinalysis, ultrasound and a general examination. In the FLUTD range, you can observe that the cat has a case of idiopathic ( Idiopathic means that the cause is unknown, but it does not mean that effective treatment can not be applied. ) cystitis. Cystitis is a condition of inflammation of the bladder, which is considered part of the urinary tract. Bladder stones can be caused by infection or blockages in the ducts.

Treatment of a urinary tract infection is a process that involves a combination of antibiotics and lifestyle changes. When it comes to bacterial cystitis, it needs to be based on a locally determined spectrum of bacteria and antibiotic sensitivity.  That is why it means that it is best to determine exactly the bacteria that cause inflammation before providing the appropriate treatment.
